LA artist Stephen Robert Johns with Molly Barnes

Stephen Robert Johns

Stephen Robert Johns is a painter living/working in Los Angeles and Costa Rica. Art education

includes Chouinard Art Institute and California Institute of the Arts, BFA 1972.

“My art is a reflection of studies of the early 20th century German-based Bau Haus movement,

with a focus on color theory (Johannes Itten) and geometry (Maholy Nagy), as well as my

organic geometric interpretation of the structure of the land, viewed from 30,000 feet”.

Corporate collections include ARCO Towers LA, Hyatt Regency New Orleans, Security Pacific

Bank, AT&T LA, Hotel Monaco Washington DC, Art Front Gallery, Tokyo Japan.

Museum exhibitions & acquisitions include Kitakyushu Municipal of Art, Frederick R. Weisman

Art Foundation Los Angeles, Museo de los Ninos, Costa Rica, and Fellowships at the Costa

Rican artist retreat, the Julia and David White Artist’s Colony.

I divide my time between Los Angeles and Costa Rica, where I maintain studios. My most

recent project was in Naples Italy, November 2022, at the Afragola high-speed train station,

curated by Cynthia Penna of ART1307, which was a dialogue between Zaha Hadid, the

architect of the rail station and my organic studies of the earth as viewed while flying.

I am represented by Kylin Gallery of Beverly Hills, CA.

Moly Barnes

Moly Barnes, art dealer, gallery owner, radio personality and author, lives and works in

Los Angeles and New York, and has launched the careers of many artists throughout

her decades-long career as a Los Angeles dealer and curator, including John

Baldessari, Gronk, Mark Kostabi and Robert Cottingham.

Molly shares her advice for a successful art career, including how to land gallery

representation, creating artist-curated exhibitions, and the right way to build connections

in the art world. “What turns me on is an artist’s personality–the idea that artists can talk

about the work. Often, artists are just too interested in talking about themselves rather

than engaging in a dialogue about the art that they’re making.”

Molly is a long-time contributor for Artists Talk on Art (ATOA) in New York. Her

achievements include the Molly Barnes Gallery in Los Angeles, gallery director of the

NY based Hotel Roger Smith Gallery as well as the host of “Molly Barnes Brown Bag

Lunches,” a regular forum for artists in Manhattan’s Roger Smith Hotel. Currently she is

host of the radio program Molly Barnes Art News, and is the author of three books about

the art business, including How to Get Hung, A Practical Guide for Emerging Artists.
